When it is so easy to get our thinking done for us, the enormous temptation is not to think. We glance at headlines and let them form our opinions, and neglect to read scholarly articles that would give us the meat on the subject. We find ourselves deceptively allured; rushing toward illusion, drawing deplorable conclusions. We accept ideas uncritically. How dare we let mental oxen lead us around the field?

We listen to a few minutes of the radio or watch TV for a while and flatter ourselves that we know all about everything. We readily accept gossip as true. It seems we need obscurity, riddles, legends, wonders, unimaginable things, which keep our minds perpetually at work. These things have more attractions than the truth.

It was Henry Ford who said, Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason so few engage in it.
