Think About It
1. How To Build Your Critical Thinking. Learn to Examine Every Detail.
2. Using Non-Linear Thinking in Critical Thinking

As critical thinkers, it is essential that we learn to examine and question every detail of our environment and protect ourselves from undue influence. Here are six things we should consider:

  1. Credibility: In order to build accurate beliefs and opinions, it is essential to check out the sources of information that we are relying on. Are they credible and unbiased? Are they presenting facts or opinions? Or are they just enticing an emotional reaction?
  2. Fact or fiction: Even if something is considered to be a fact by many, it does not mean that it is indeed true. I read a statement from someone on LinkedIn the other day that said, “Leadership is not about POWER, but about influence.” Many people uncritically accepted that statement as true. You must read a statement like that with critical intent.
  3. Test your own: It is important to be mindful and always test our own beliefs and assumptions.
  4. Decisions and conclusions: In order to make informed decisions on arguments presented to us, it is vital that we carefully examine the logic and reasoning behind the evidence presented. Do their opinions reflect sound reasoning and are based on trustworthy evidence? Is there a possibility that their opinions are being used to manipulate or deceive us? It is important to ask ourselves the tough questions in order to arrive at well-informed and evidence-based conclusions.
  5. Biases and prejudices: We have all been conditioned with biases and prejudices that can adversely affect our capacity to be objective about things. In fact, no one would have a bias or prejudice if care had not been taken to give us one. We should not only be conscious of our own biases and strive to eliminate them, but we should also be mindful of the biases of others.
  6. Repercussions: Before making decisions and taking action, we must consider the repercussions of our decisions, both the intended and the unforeseen. Are these actions likely to bring about positive or negative results?
