A recent social media post claimed that leadership is about responsibility, not power. While many uncritically agreed, I believe this statement is fundamentally flawed. Leadership is about both power and responsibility.

Power is essential to leadership. It is the ability to influence, to make decisions, and to execute plans. However, power can be misused. When a leader’s power exceeds their wisdom, corruption can occur. This is not a problem with power itself, but with the individual wielding it. As Lord Acton famously stated, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Yet, power should not be feared or avoided. It is a necessary tool for effective leadership. A leader without power is impotent. They cannot make changes, inspire others, or achieve goals. Power is the ability to act, to make a difference.

The key lies in responsible use of power. Leaders must be accountable for their actions, transparent in their decision-making, and committed to serving the greater good. By embracing power and using it wisely, leaders can create positive change and inspire others.
